How to Make Peace with Food and Listen to Your Body

Why Foods are Not “Good” or “Bad”

Foods are not inherently healthy or unhealthy and you are not “good” or “bad” for eating certain foods. For example, if you were really hungry and craving something heavier and warm with a salty flavor, an orange really wouldn’t be a “healthy” choice because it would be denying your needs. In that case, a burger would actually be a better option. Food is meant to be nourishing and pleasurable; not something to torture ourselves over.

Why You Should Give Yourself Unconditional Permission to Eat Anything at Anytime

This is a MAJOR aspect of making peace with food and your body. When you allow yourself the option to have any food at any time, this creates a profound sense of freedom and trust between your mind and body. You no longer have to...

How to Recognize & Reject the Diet Mentality

Why Diets Don’t Live Up to Their Promises

Research has shown that 95% of diets fail and eating restraint is actually associated with weight gain over time. Not to mention, of those 5% who “succeed”, many of them are actually engaging in disordered eating behaviors. Our bodies literally can’t tell the difference between dieting and actual starvation. This leads to slowing of your metabolism and increased cravings. It’s not surprising that most diets result in weight cycling which is associated with increased mortality risk and inflammation. So WHY THE F**K is everyone so caught up in diet culture?!

Here’s why: the weight loss industry is worth over $60 billion dollars/year on the premise that you are “not okay” and need to be “fixed”. It’s interesting to think about it this...

5 Ways Intuitive Eating Changed My Life

This post is part of my Introduction to Intuitive Eating series. Check out “What is Intuitive Eating?” to start from the beginning.

Hi, I’m Madison!

Let me give you an idea of what Sunny Thymes is all about. I don’t subscribe to any diets. There are no “can’t haves” here. I’m all for intuitive eating: listening to your body to guide your food and exercise choices.

I want to share my intuitive eating journey with you because I want you to know that you are not alone! Because trust me. I’ve been where you are and I know how hard it can be.

How Intuitive Eating Found Me

I say Intuitive Eating found me, not that I found it because to be honest, I was not seeking it out nor did I think I needed to change my eating habits and behaviors. I struggled with an eating disorder in high school and by time I went to college, I thought I had fully recovered.

However (as I later realized), I was still living my life in a state of fear and...

5 Reasons Why the BMI is BS

intuitive eating Sep 20, 2018

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple (but bullshit) calculation that originally sought to track health risk among the US population. However, as you will read more about in the 5 reasons why the BMI is BS below, this calculation is fatally flawed for many reasons and is not in any way a viable way of tracking health risk in any population (or individual for that matter).

1. BMI is not a good indicator of health

The BMI calculation includes only weight and height as variables. It does not account for mental health, stress levels, physical activity, genes, environment, relationships, socioeconomic status, career satisfaction or financial security. However, all of these are important factors in determining an individual’s health.

According to this reputable study, “using the blood pressure, triglyceride, cholesterol, glucose, insulin resistance and C-reactive protein data, population frequencies/percentages of metabolically healthy versus unhealthy individuals were...

5 Reasons Why You Can Eat Dessert Every Day

intuitive eating Aug 23, 2018

Most people are baffled when I tell them I have dessert almost every night. Yes, I do and I feel great about it. I’m going to tell you 5 reasons why you can eat dessert every day! Yes, I know, shocking. Just keep reading!

5 Reasons Why You Can Eat Dessert Every Day

1. It tastes DAMN good, is pleasurable and is satisfying!

To me, this one is a no brainer but it’s surprising how many people feel like they shouldn’t experience pleasure or satisfaction through food. Foods are not inherently healthy or unhealthy. For example, if you were really hungry and craving something heavier and warm with a salty flavor, a peach really wouldn’t be a “healthy” choice because it would be denying your needs. In that case, a burger would actually be a better option. “Healthy” has a really relative meaning depending on context. Essentially, this means the word healthy has no meaning in relation to food. All foods have their place in intuitive eating. Once...
