There’s No Such Thing as “Good” or “Bad” Foods

intuitive eating Feb 17, 2020

Good or bad according to whom? Is an apple always good? Is a cookie always bad? Eating “good” has nothing to do with the foods you eat. It’s about listening and trusting yourself to choose which food is good for your body.

Labeling food as good and bad is one of the worst things you can do for your physical and mental health.

I totally understand why most people fall into this black and white trap of thinking, though, because I’ve been there. It’s easier to believe what everyone else is telling us about what’s “good” and “bad” other people's advice that something is good or bad for us than to question it and take the initiative to listen to our own body.

There’s no such thing as “good” or “bad” foods.

Letting someone else decide what's healthy and unhealthy for you is like being the pilot of a plane and letting your passengers take the wheel. Can you imagine how that would...

Stop Eating What Everyone Else Is!

intuitive eating Feb 11, 2020

Let’s talk about this idea that somebody else knows better about what we should and shouldn't be eating.  I see so many women making this mistake.  And I totally get it because I’ve been there. I used to spend all my time worrying about food - trying to get my eating “right” and always looking for the next the next rule, superfood, shiny eating plan or the person on Instagram that was going to solve all my eating problems.  Surprise, surprise, that didn't work.

Our bodies are DESIGNED to tell us what, when and how much to eat

Thinking that we need someone else to tell us what to eat is like saying that we need a doctor to walk by us all day long telling our hearts to keep beating. Our hearts will beat naturally on their own just like our bodies are designed to tell us what, when, and how much to eat naturally. Whenever we let someone else dictate our eating, we completely block ourselves off from being able to tap into those...

Your Weight Does NOT Determine Your Health

intuitive eating Jan 05, 2020

I want to set the record straight today. Weight does NOT actually determine your health and I will tell you why. I’ve seen so many women struggling with their weight and making the mistake in thinking that their weight determines their health. They’re thinking about food and their bodies all the time. They are in a constant battle over what, when, and how much should they eat - and it’s just consuming their lives.

I don’t want that to happen to you.

But I totally get it. If you resonated with that, I've been there and I absolutely understand why you might believe that weight determines health. Because growing up, we are constantly told that we need to eat less, exercise more, and lose weight, and that doing so will lead us to perfect health, happiness, and confidence. We will just be living the dream life, right?

“weight determines health” is a myth we are sold and conditioned to believe.

No wonder if everyone's been telling us this myth our whole...

Why Food Guilt is Actually a GOOD Thing

Uncategorized Oct 27, 2019

But first, in case you don’t know me, my name is Madison Surdyke. I am the leading authority in helping women in the control that food has over them so they can take back control of their lives, leveraging the power of their own brains.

Let me tell you why food guilt is actually a good thing. We all know food guilt sucks, right? But what most of us don’t know is that it’s actually the underlying belief that sucks; the belief that there even is something to feel guilty about. We wouldn’t have the guilt if we didn’t have the belief that there was something to be guilty about.

Negative Emotions Are Proof We Are Telling Ourselves a Lie

So, whenever we have this seemingly negative emotion of guilt, it gives us the opportunity to look at what that belief is. And, because it’s a negative emotion, that is proof that we are telling ourselves a lie. So, whenever we’re telling ourselves a lie, it produces a negative emotion in our brains and our...

Does weight loss actually make you happier and healthier?

intuitive eating Sep 09, 2019

In today’s diet and appearance obsessed world, it’s easy to believe that you will have it all once you have the “perfect” body. We’ve all been conditioned to believe that once we reach a certain weight, THEN we’ll be happy, healthy and worthy.

But believing you need to be thin or have the perfect body in order to be happy and healthy is one of the WORST beliefs you can have about your body and health.

I know this is completely different from what everyone else is telling you. I know that going on a diet and focusing on weight loss feels like your only option. But I promise, there’s another way. A better way that doesn’t require you sacrificing your happiness and well-being.

However, I don’t blame you for wanting the perfect body. We’re constantly told that once we achieve our #bodygoals, then our lives will magically transform and we will instantly become happier and healthier (living the dream right?).

9 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Starting an Elimination Diet

Should you go on an elimination diet? Ask yourself these 9 questions to help you figure out if it’s right for you!

What is an elimination diet?

An elimination diet involves cutting out foods from your diet that you think you may be intolerant to. The foods are later brought back into your diet, one at a time, so you can see how they affect you.

Elimination diets have become all the craze in the wellness world. Literally, when anything goes wrong in our lives, we are like “oh it must be the food, gotta go on an elimination diet”. We fail to consider ALL of the other potential causes of what might be going on such as stress or not eating enough.

Also, it’s natural for your body shows symptoms of intolerance when you reintroduce foods you’ve previously dubbed off limits. Your body just isn’t used to those foods but that doesn’t mean you have to write them off for good. There’s other tools for checking in with how food makes you feel that...

10 Principles of Intuitive Eating

intuitive eating Jun 01, 2019

What is intuitive eating?

Intuitive Eating is a non-diet, weight inclusive approach to health and wellness that helps you make peace with food and your body. It’s about discovering what a well-nourished life means to YOU by listening to YOUR body. It’s about following internal cues (hunger, fullness, satisfaction) over external cues (diet culture, food rules, societal trends). For more detail, read my What is Intuitive Eating post.

We live in a world obsessed with eating the perfect diet and having the perfect body (diet culture).

What is diet culture?

Christy Harrison describes diet culture to a T. She says:

Diet culture is a system of beliefs that…

…Worships thinness and equates it to health and moral virtue, which means you can spend your whole life thinking you’re irreparably broken just because you don’t look like the impossibly thin “ideal.”

…Promotes weight loss as a means of attaining higher status, which means...
